They have an impressive range of motion and you can really dial in your ideal driving position – this may be a BMW, but you don’t really sit that low in the driver’s seat (even if you lower it all the way down, like I did). Even without the V8, the inline-six in our long-term X5 is plenty quick. In the cold light of day, when a Frozen Black metallic X7 pulls up next to you in the supermarket car park it will likely look just as imposing as either of the other two despite it lacking the red nostrils at the front, and possibly it looks even more refined and consistent as a result. Looking sufficiently muscular without either looking bulky or heavy, the X5 is all style and has even shed about 110 kilos off its earlier avatar. By simply driving by the space, the SAV notifies you as it measures the two cars you’re looking to park between, at that point you hit the parking button on the centre display, take your hands off the wheel, and ease your foot off the brake to allow it to park for you.
Just looking at aesthetics, this X7 could well be the one to choose over the other two if money was no option. The X7 M50i goes for two-axle air suspension as standard; it’s an option on the smaller SUV. EPA-rated fuel economy jumps, owners have the option to make short trips on electric power, and the price doesn’t jump nearly as much as it would if you’d gone all electric. It’s just as powerful as the base models, but it returns better fuel economy. It kicked off the craze for sportier SUVs that felt more like cars to drive – sacrificing a bit of ruggedness and rock-climbing ability in favour of better handling, improved ride comfort and a smarter interior. The air suspension allows for almost an inch lower ride height in Sport mode, or at speeds above 85 mph; alternately, it can be lifted up to 1.6-inches for better clearance. The BMW X5 carries a much lower Destination Charge than the Volvo XC90. BMW has paired the V8 with an eight-speed Sport Steptronic transmission, with new shift programing and steering wheel paddles. BMW is now pursuing this two or four wheel drive strategy with its larger SUVs-the X5 added an sDrive variant with the 2014 model year, and the middle-sized X3 added it for the 2015 model year. The 2022 BMW X5 range kicks off from A$104,400 (plus on-road costs) for the “X5 xDRIVE25d” variant and finishes at A$209,900 (plus on-road costs) for the “X5 M COMPETITION” variant. The BMW X5 has a five star ANCAP safety rating out of five. Plus, if you have one of these, next time you are out with the family to go to the mall, you can put on shades, dress in a finely tailored suit, and carry a briefcase to pretend you are working for the organization. With torque of 540 Nm between 1750 and 3000 rpm it’s not hard to understand why, despite a price increase of around $3500 over the outgoing model, BMW Australia anticipates it accounting for around four out of five sales. Be careful because these can boost the price in a hurry.
Meanwhile, the differential can push power left to right at the rear, depending on traction conditions. Going around corners is just as important, of course, and so there’s xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive with an electronically controlled rear M Sport differential. Double-wishbone front and five-link rear suspension has been fettled by the M team, with the X5 M50i combining it with Adaptive M Suspension. Pricing starts at $82,150 (plus $995 destination) for the 2020 X5 M50i, and at $99,600 (plus $995 destination) for the 2020 X7 M50i. The 2020 X5 M50i combines them with 20-inch M Star-spoke light alloy wheels with 275/45R20 run-flat all-season tires as standard; you can have up to 22-inch wheels if you’d prefer. The 2020 X7 M50i goes for 22-inch cerium grey M V-spoke wheels as standard, though you can get smaller 21-inch versions if you’d prefer. Can’t get a more comfortable car than this. M Sport Brakes get two-piece, lightweight compound brake disks.
